British Heart Foundation

The vision of the British Heart Foundation is of a world in which people do not die prematurely of heart disease. They achieve this through pioneering research, vital prevention activity and ensuring quality care and support for everyone living with heart disease.

Chartered Society of Physiotherapists

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy is an organisation that aims to: 

  • lead and support physiotherapists in developing and promoting high quality innovative patient care 
  • protect and further advance the interests and working lives of members of the Society. 
  • raise the profile of the profession and influence the health care agenda 
  • work openly in partnership to meet the diverse needs of members of the Society and their patients.

Crown Fitness 

Crown Fitness Club is a health and fitness facility in Llantwit Fadre, Pontypridd. Crown Fitness is currently developing a network of private gyms and fitness facilities in Wales.

Food Standards Agency Wales 

The Food Standards Agency Wales (FSA Wales) was launched in 2000 as part of a new, UK-wide independent body set up to protect the public’s health and consumer interests in relation to food. Key areas of work for the Agency in Wales are: 

  • Nutrition - providing advice to the public, the National Assembly and others on nutrition and diet, working with the Assembly in areas of shared responsibility 
  • Protecting consumers - through effective enforcement and monitoring, working closely with Welsh Local Authorities 
  • Reducing food borne illness - working with industry and enforcers to minimise contamination, and promoting public awareness of safe food handling 
  • Ensuring food safety - for example, by contributing to UK action to ensure that chemicals to do not compromise food safety, and that BSE controls are properly enforced 
  • Supporting consumer choice - through accurate and meaningful labelling and by making publicly available information on food safety issues, survey results and enforcement activity

Public Health Wales

Public Health Wales is an NHS organisation providing professionally independent public health advice and services to protect and improve the health and wellbeing of the population of Wales.

Public Health Wales has four statutory functions:
  • To provide and manage a range of public health, health protection, healthcare improvement, health advisory, child protection and microbiological laboratory services and services relating to the surveillance, prevention and control of communicable diseases; 
  • To develop and maintain arrangements for making information about matters related to the protection and improvement of health in Wales available to the public; to undertake and commission research into such matters and to contribute to the provision and development of training in such matters; 
  • To undertake the systematic collection, analysis and dissemination of information about the health of the people of Wales in particular including cancer incidence, mortality and survival; and prevalence of congenital anomalies; and 
  • To provide, manage, monitor, evaluate and conduct research into screening of health conditions and screening of health related matters.

Skills Active 

Skills Active is the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure and Learning. Skills Active leads the skills and productivity drive across the sport and recreation, health and fitness, outdoors, play-work and caravan industries. Skills Active is dedicated to the needs of businesses and organisations by helping them to increase their competitiveness and productivity; and aims to bring together employers, education and government, and unite them in a common, employer-led agenda on skills. 

Sports Council Wales 

The Sports Council for Wales is the national organisation responsible for developing and promoting sport and active lifestyles. It is the main adviser on sporting matters to the Welsh Assembly Government and is responsible for distributing funds from the National Lottery to sport in Wales.

UWIC

The University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) offers a comprehensive range of courses which attract students of all ages and from many backgrounds. There are nine academic schools which offer a wide range of courses including courses on nutrition, dietetics, food science and catering from short courses to HNC/D and degree, through to Masters and PhD.
UWIC’s research mission focuses on strategic and applied research. UWIC’s leading research centres are recognised as playing a key role in supporting the economic, social and cultural development in Wales and the UK.

Sport, Health and Exercise Division, University of Glamorgan

The Sport, Health and Exercise Science academic team emphasizes the multi-disciplinary study of exercise and nutrition as it relates to sport, health and human performance. The overarching aim is:
‘To provide students with a challenging, exciting and first-class education in Sport, Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science that is underpinned by internationally recognised research and delivered in an environment that is modern, vibrant, friendly and exceptionally well resourced.’
The programmes of study within the Division of Sport, Health and Exercise Science are underpinned by traditional and important academic subjects such as human anatomy, physiology and nutrition. In addition some academic courses in Sport, Health and Exercise Science also provide students with a range of opportunities for those wishing to pursue a career in coaching and performance in a chosen sport or sport in general.

Wellbeing Wales Network

Wellbeing Wales Network is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Health Challenge Wales Voluntary Sector Grant Scheme. The following are strategic objectives for the Network:
1. To make the Wellbeing Wales Network the forum that shares, listens and learns about wellbeing;
2. To publicise the concept of wellbeing;
3. To explore the lived experience of policy in terms of wellbeing;
4. To integrate wellbeing into future plans, actions and strategies;
5. To build the capacity of the voluntary sector to engage in the wellbeing agenda and
6. To secure the long term future of the Wellbeing Wales Network. 

Welsh Assembly Government 

The Welsh Assembly Government is responsible for developing and implementing policies and programmes for all issues that have been devolved to Wales.

Welsh Local Government Association 

The Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) represents the interests of local government and promotes local democracy in Wales. It represents the 22 local authorities in Wales and the 4 police authorities, 3 fire and rescue authorities and 3 national park authorities are associate members. The WLGA’s primary purposes are to promote better local government and its reputation and to support authorities in the development of policies and priorities which will improve public services and democracy.

Welsh Network of Healthy Schools Schemes

Welsh Network of Healthy School Schemes (WNHSS) encourages the development of local healthy school schemes within a national framework. These local schemes encourage the development of health promoting schools in their area.
