Department of Health 5 a day

'5 A Day' is a government led programme ran by the British Dietetic Association and Department of Health. The campaign aims to increase fruit and vegetable consumption by raising awareness of the health benefits of eating fruit and vegetables and improving access to fruit and vegetables through targeted action. The key message of the 5 A Day programme is to eat at least five portions (400g) of a variety of fruit and vegetables per day. This recommendation is consistent with dietary recommendations around the world, including those from the World Health Organisation.

Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption can significantly reduce the risk of many chronic diseases. It has been estimated that eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day could reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer by 20%.

The 5 A Day resources are intended to support staff who are developing 5 A Day projects across England, including local 5 A Day initiatives and the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme. Resources available include free brochures, charts, leaflets and a poster.

Top Tips for Top Mums is an extension of the 5 a day campaign and encourages parents to share tips and ideas with each other on how they get their children to eat more fruit and vegetables. Top Tips for Top Mums targets young families from low income backgrounds with children aged between two and eleven. A host of practical tips have been posted on the website to help parents share their own experiences.
